We recently visited Door County, Wisconsin, and took a lighthouse tour. It was very informative and we enjoyed it very much.
Coming from the middle of the country, I didn’t encounter lighthouses or know much about them. And range lights were new to me. You can read about the Baileys Harbor Range Lights here. I learned that the captain of a ship needs even more direction to enter especially hazardous harbors, that’s why there are two lights. When the captain lines them up, he knows he is on the safe path to the shore.
There is an old hymn called Let The Lower Lights Be Burning, talking about the lower light of the pair of range lights. You can listen to a rendition here. And see the words here. We do not do the saving, but we can be a guide for someone who is seeking truth.
Jesus even calls us the light of the world in Matthew 5:14-16. He says that when we light a lamp, we put it on a lamp stand, not under a basket. In the same way, we are to let our light shine so others may see our good works and glorify God.
